5 STEPS TO A MORE PEACEFUL MORNING

We’ve all had those magical mornings (probably on vacation or a holiday weekend) where we welcomed the new day and it felt sweet and amazing to enjoy every moment. Why can’t it be that way all the time, or at least much, much more of the time? Perhaps it can. These five steps can bring significantly more peace to your mornings over time (and would make for excellent resolutions if you ask us!)

We’ve all had those magical mornings (probably on vacation or a holiday weekend) where we welcomed the new day and it felt sweet and amazing to enjoy every moment. Why can’t it be that way all the time, or at least much, much more of the time? Perhaps it can. These five steps can bring significantly more peace to your mornings over time (and would make for excellent resolutions if you ask us!)

Get up at least 30 minutes earlier. Painful? Initially. But we promise you will quickly notice a difference in the way you approach the day. Giving yourself permission to start the morning slowly is a luxury. Notice how nice it feels to be awake; check in with how you’re feeling before you bounce out of bed. Whatever ends up filling the time, let it be slow, organic and fun. If the task is just part of your morning routine, allow yourself to savor it instead of rushing through the motions. When you slow down and become open to the information around you, no morning is as ‘routine’ as you once believed. We'll let you in on a secret: committing to this step, or anything for that matter, won’t make a real impact when done out of guilt or obligation. The why is just as important as the how.

Make time to sit. Enjoy drinking your coffee or tea, sit outside, read or meditate.  Whatever it is, sit down, and enjoy the quiet. Consider rituals you have experienced in the past: weddings, births, birthday celebrations, prayer, concerts, watching a favorite movie with friends, funerals, baptisms - notice how you're sitting down for many of these? There is a stillness and single-pointed focus in the commemoration and celebration. You breathe deeply and effortlessly focus on what is happening rather than worrying about what you’ll do next. Whatever you choose to ritualize, grab a seat while you're doing it. It's a sure step to slow you down long enough for peace to find you.

Imagine how you’d like to feel during your day. Briefly scan through the events of your day and envision the interactions as you ideally would like them to unfold. Of course, many things may evolve differently than expected, but it is a grounding practice to take stock of what’s in front of you. During the day we are often processing what will happen later (occasionally in a worst-case-scenario fashion). Simply use this tendency and power of your planning mind to consider the scenario you prefer - it can't hurt to try, right?

Tend to living things. If you don’t have any plants, invest in something green! Caring for another life engages in a feedback loop inherent of this interaction. We are nourished by the connection whether we take the time to notice or not. So pour water and spray fronds, feed the dogs, converse with your kids - give your attention for a moment, acknowledging that other lives depend on your care.

Get Outside. No matter the time of year (whether you sit outside for an hour in the morning or briefly step onto your balcony to inhale a brisk blast), get outside. Feel the air, enjoy fragrant early morning aromas and observe how the energy in your own body interacts with the natural environment. It sounds easy because it is. Getting outside is a boost to your soul - and the Vitamin D works wonders on your skin, too.
